Health authorities in many countries are raising concerns about a new variant of Corona Virus called Delta Plus. Over 40 cases of the Delta plus variant had reported in India this week.
What is Delta Plus Variant?
Delta plus variant is related to the Delta variant, which was first identified in India last year, which might have driven the second wave of Covid-19 in India. Delta plus variant has acquired the spike protein mutation called K417N, which was also found in the first identified Beta variant in South Africa. This new variant is appeared to be more infectious and transmissible than other variants and is occupied with some existing features of the Delta variant.
According to the sources, Delta plus in India was first reported in a public health England bulletin on June 11. The 40 cases in India are from three states - Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Kerala. This variant is also found in other countries like - USA, UK, Switzerland, China, Japan, Portugal, Poland, Nepal, and Russia.
On the other hand, top virologists have concerns about labelling Delta plus as a variant of concern, as there was no data available to prove that. Various studies are ongoing globally to test the effectiveness of vaccines against this variant, at present Delta plus does not seem to be common.
